Gramp's Missouri Boys Class One Basketball Ratings
Gramp's Missouri Boys Class One Basketball Rating -
Well, well, well. Who do you think three-peated? Well, South Iron, of course, but it was an upstart St. Elizabeth team with a 21-11 record that the Panthers, 29-4, had to beat in overtime to win the title, 56-47. In fact, South Iron was behind until the last few minutes and needed a last-second put-back off a Colton Dinkins missed three-point shot to get the game to OT. Amazingly, it was the fourth overtime game in the last eight games for the Panthers.
That three-peat is even more amazing knowing how they got it! Coach Dinkins was living dangerously the last couple of weeks of this season, but he took a totally new team back to a championship after winning with a lot more talent the previous two years. That's how championship teams and their programs work. Just keep plugging players into the system, work hard and collect the dividends.
So South Iron ends up in the number 1 spot but St. Elizabeth is not second. I have them in a respectable ninth in my final poll. I am sure I will hear screaming from the gallery about not being second but there were more consistent teams with fewer losses ahead of them in the rating calculations. One of those excellent teams was Platte Valley or to some, the ridiculous MSHSAA-coined school name of Jefferson Conception Junction/South Nodaway. The Eagles, 29-3, were third in the tournament, devasting Glasgow by 36 in the third-place game and one of the most consistent teams all year long.
Green City, Chadwick, Bunker, Glasgow were all impressive during the season and any of these teams might have run up to a title game with a slightly different bracket set-up.
So St. Elizabeth is my #9 rated team and they can complain about Gramps ratings, but they have something people will remember for a long time after everyone forgets about Gramps ratings. They will have a second place trophy in the school trophy case, and no one else in the state can say that for 2023. Doesn't change my calculations. I rate on consistency but cudos to the Hornets for getting that silver trophy!
Here are my final class one boys ratings. Have a great summer.

The Class one boy's state tournament will be a hot mess.
First off, the #2 and #4 teams, South Iron and Bunker, play each other in the district three final.
Then, districts 1-4 and 13-16 are in the top bracket, which means the #1 and #3 teams, Green City (district 13) and Platte Valley (district 16) will play each other in the quarterfinals and that winner will probably face the winner of the South Iron/Bunker game. So, you get one of the top four in the finals to face the lower bracket winner who will be a 10- or 15-point underdog to the top bracket winner.
It sucks! Why does MSHSAA continue to insist on a formulaic state tournament set-up when you could seed the teams (by Gramps ratings or some lesser tool) and get the best four teams in the semi-finals.

Is there a new sheriff in town? For the first time this winter, Green City tops Gramps Missouri Boys class one ratings, barely edging out perennial powerhouses South Iron and Platte Valley (Jefferson/South Nodaway/Conjunction whatever?). The difference between these three and Bunker and Atlanta is minuscule. Any of these top five teams could be the next class one state champion.
Green City is 17-2, with only a loss to Atlanta and Salisbury, but they beat Atlanta by 64 and 22 in two early-season meetings. Grundy County is tied in district 14 with a 17-2 record but Green City beat them by 31 so I would have to save Gophers are the district favorite (being a former Minnesota Gopher letterman in track, I am sort of pulling for them rodents).
Their best finish was second place at state in 1993 so this might be their year if they can get by the highly experienced South Iron and Platte Valley squads, which are all in the upper bracket of the state tournament playoff. Yikes, MSHSAA! Can't you ever get a seeded tournament so that the best teams play in the final?

Gramps Missouri class one boys ratings are crammed with good teams and Platte Valley up in the Northwest and South Iron down in the Southeast are in almost a virtual tie for first, except that Platte Valley is a fraction of a rating point ahead of former #1 South Iron.
Not too far behind these two perennial powerhouses are Green City, Atlanta, and Bunker, who will all have to get by one of the top two to get deep into the state championship run.
How does that compare with the MBCA poll? Not too bad although my #6 Chadwick is only an Honorable Mention in the coach's poll, and I have Leeton, St. Elizabeth, and Glasgow in my top ten and the coaches have NW Hughesville, Higbee, Thomas Jefferson Independent in the top ten when I calculated them to be outside the top ten.
I hope Leeton, St. Elizabeth, and Glasgow get more consideration for that MBCA top ten.
Class 1 Boys: Gramps rank
- South Iron #2
- Bunker #4
- Green City #3
- Platte Valley #1
- Northwest (Hughesville) #11
- Higbee #12
- Atlanta #5
- Thomas Jefferson #20
- Leeton #7
- Humansville #10
Others receiving votes: Macks Creek, St. Elizabeth, Winston, Wheatland, Chadwick

Perennial powerhouse South Iron tops Gramp's Missouri Boys Class One ratings with Atlanta, Platte Valley (South Nodaway/Jefferson Conception), Bunker, and Green City close behind. The next five drop off a little but are still looking good. I did not see Glasgow, Delta Deering or Brunswick in the MBCA polls so coaches, take notice of these deserving teams. Many of the same teams are in both top tens but not in the same order.
I may not have all the holiday tournament results in the model but this is a good start.
