Give some girls teams some credit!

Image
I don't want anyone to think I am disrespecting the MBCA coach's poll for girls' basketball when I share my analysis.  I just want to make sure the teams that deserve votes actually are recognized.  Some teams seem to run under the radar all season long with the coaches poll and I do not know why? So here's my analysis of the latest MBCA poll with my rating and ranking of teams in their polls.  For the most part, they know who the top two or three teams in the class are, but then it gets fuzzy with some teams I might rank in the top 20 or 30 are in the top ten and a lot of teams that are in my top ten based upon game statistics, don't even show up as receiving votes. And there's no disrespect meant for those hard-working kids that are in the MBCA poll but not in my top ten.  If you like the MBCA poll better then ignore Gramps.  If you are a die-hard statistics type, take another look. Now, why would I presume to preach to Missouri basketball coaches?...

Carl Junction - Living the dream 1/22/2023

Image
I had a few comments about teams down in the Southwest this past week.  @MikeKelly_ND was tweeting about Nixa's rating vs. teams that had beaten them and then Sigh... @cardinals150 chimed in about Carl Junction trouncing Nixa by 13 (According to Sigh... the lead was 22 until "garbage time").  So I decided to dig into my ratings and check out where I had erred. As I was in the process of looking at the team ratings, I noticed that Nixa was playing Park Hill South, an excellent KC area team, and Carl Junction was playing Kickapoo in the Bill Hanson Memorial Tournament. The two teams, Nixa and Carl Junction, seem to be heading in opposite directions right now.  Nixa lost by nineteen to Park Hill South and have lost their last three games.  Carl Junction is 15-1 and on a roll, after beating Kickapoo on two late game free throws, after having been down by something like 31-13 in the first half.  Check out the article here.   Carl Junction wins Bill Hanson M...

Calculating St. Pius X Festus rating - a lesson for coach Chris Miller

Image
Chris Miller, boys coach for a solid St. Pius X Festus team, inquired about how the model works.  I share a few screenshots with him and am providing them below.  I use a large Excel spreadsheet for the boys and the girls.  Every team is entered into the spreadsheet and I calculate an average rating by summing the game ratings and dividing by the number of games.  I calculate some other things along the way and it is easy to copy the results and dump them into a report. Each team is listed in the Excel Formulas section under defined names.  I use abbreviations for each school and link that defined name to the average rating for the team.  When St. Pius X beats  Valmeyer, Illinois by 31, I add the Valmeyer rating and the 31-point differential to give St. Pius X a game rating of 109.  The table below shows how I get the game ratings that enter into the master spreadsheet.  I don't do a table like this for all teams unless I get a squabble...
