Gramp's Missouri Boys Class Five Final Basketball Ratings

Gramp's Missouri Boys Class Five Final Basketball Ratings - Update March 26, 2023

No one can argue that Cardinal Ritter is #1 again this year.  But who should be #2?  Well, the MBCA poll takes the final four and places them above everyone else, no matter how good they were or what their record might have been.  Was Ladue good this year?  Oh, yeah, baby.  But Cape Girardeau Central was 27-3 and lost to Chicago Simeon, who was comparable to Vashon, CBC, and then was upset by Sikeston in the district final after beating them by 27 during the season.  So Cape Central deserves better than seventh in the MBCA poll.  I guess you could call Cape Central and Ladue tied for #2.

Westminster Academy sneaks in at #4 ahead of third-place Jeff City and De Smet sneaks in ahead of Pembroke Hill who finished fourth at state.  Sikeston, who upset Cape Central, comes in at #8.  Borgia, who was undefeated at one point in the season, ends up #9 and Bolivar turns up #10.  Last year's state champion, Webster Groves, finishes #11 after a perplexing up-and-down season.  They should be back to contend next year.

Enjoy the class five ratings.  I will be posting all-class boys' ratings as soon as I finish class 4.

Woe is me.  I took my eye off the ball and did not issue rankings by the district for class five boys so, somewhat after the fact, I put them below my prediction table.

The predictions are based on ratings prior to districts.  Gramps hit 88% for class five first-round games last night with the big upset being Branson's upset win over #1 seed Bolivar.

Gramps' Missouri boys class five ratings looks slightly different than the MBCA poll which does not have Jefferson City in their top ten whereas I have them rated at third.  The MBCA has Ritter at #1 and Cape Central at #2 but you could throw at hat over them both and not see them cuz they are that close in rating.  Again, I hate to berate the MSHSAA playoff system but the best two teams will meet as district champions rather than in a state final.  Sad but true.  There are some great teams in the lower bracket of state (districts 3-6) with De Smet, Ladue, Westminster and Jefferson City equally favored to get to the state finals.

Cape Central is on top of class five boys and Cardinal Ritter is #2 which means that two well-deserving teams will meet in a sectional game rather than the state final.  So it goes with MSHSAA state tournaments.  The two best teams should get to the final but it won't work until they seed the final eight or sixteen teams.

De Smet still looks strong despite some holiday setbacks and Ladue continues to look very strong.  Those two teams will meet for the district 3 final.  Sigh.

Borgia continues strong and will meet #6 Jeff City in district five final.  Sigh.

Bolivar and Parkview, the #8 and #9 teams in my ratings will meet in district six final.  Sigh.

Which means that half the teams rated outside my top ten will be in the final eight at class five state.  Sigh.

Because Gramps model is interactive, changes in class four or three teams will show up in some changes in other classes, like class five.  I have not done a thorough review of class five again, but some teams shifted significantly, so I am posting a new ranking even though I have not entered all class five games since 12/10.
