Gramp's Missouri Boys Class Four Final Basketball Ratings
Gramp's Missouri Boys Class Four Final Basketball Ratings - Updated 3/27/2023 for district eight analysis,
Upon further review, the ratings are reversed. See, Kevin, even Gramps can own up to overlookin g somebody good.
Was there a better team in the state of Missouri than Vashon? Maybe their record didn't look that good but Tony Irons had them play a typically difficult out-of-state schedule against nationally ranked teams. So, for the casual observer, you would shrug your shoulders and say "eh"! 25-7 ain't nuttin'. They started the season 2.4, so you had to wonder about whether Irons had rebooted with the same level of skill but Vashon did not lose to a single Missouri team, going 15-0. Beat Staley by one in OT at Vashon's house. Not bad! Third straight state title and sixth in the last eight years.
Now picking the second-best team in the state was more difficult. Father Tolton also played a tough schedule and was my #2 team all year. They gave Vashon a scare but lost by four in the semi-final and then the bottom fell out against St. Joes Lafayette in the third-place game, losing by 21, which Tolton should have won by 10.
Park Hills Central was in my top 5 all year and they came up big down the stretch, winning by 20 or more until the final with Vashon, losing by 27. I had to give them a slight edge statistically over Father Tolton, while you could call it a tie, Park Hills Central is my #2 team. And despite the beating in the third-place game, I can't figure out how St. Joes Lafayette could be ahead of Tolton, based on their entire season. Lafayette got the third-place trophy but Tolton's overall season was just statistically better than Lafayette's.
In the rest of the top 10, # 5 Miller Career couldn't get past Vashon or they might have been competing for a state title. They were that good, even though their record was 16-11. Miller Academy never did get the respect it deserved from the MBCA poll.
# 6 MICDS reeled off nine straight wins, including an upset of # 8 John Burroughs before losing a close one to Park Hills Central by four. Burroughs, coached by Pee Wee Lenard, was a team that could have been in that final four too. #7 KC Center and # 9 Fatima, who lost to Tolton in their district final, also had fine seasons.
Hope you enjoyed my ratings this year. C U next year.

The competition in Missouri boys class four is for second place. Who's going to end up playing Vashon in the class four championship?
Vashon is the best team in Missouri after beating Staley and knocking off #14 nationally ranked Chicago Simeon. Could someone in class four upset the Wolverines? Sure enough, but it would take some significant injuries or a horrible shooting night for coach Tony Iron’s squad and a superb effort by the other team.
I also want to give a shoutout for Miller Career Academy who lost to Vashon by 21, which means they are about a 135 rated team, third in my ratings but only an honorable mention in the MBCA poll. Opponents take notice!

What's the saying "Pete and repeat"? Well, if you looked at the Missouri class four girls, Vashon was on top of Gramp's ratings and the Vashon boys are on top of the boys' ratings. But it is not just Vashon with top-rated boys and girls teams. Fatima (#3 boys and #4 girls) and Park Hill Central (#4 boys and #8 girls) both have teams in the top ten.
John Burroughs and Cardinal Ritter would both have teams in the top ten IF the boys and girls were in the same class but Burroughs boys are class four and the girls are on top of class five. The Ritter girls are #2 in class four girls and the boys are #2 in class five. Confused yet? It keeps me scratching my thinning head of hair, trying to keep it all straight. Vashon has played a few more local teams but the end of January and early February will solidify their rating. Tolton, Fatima, Park Hills Central, MIller Career, KC Center, John Burroughs, and MICDS are all solid teams but nowhere close to Vashon right now.
Continued success to all the teams.

For what they are worth, here are the early season class four boys basketball rankings. Vashon is off doing their thing with nationally ranked teams so I have a hard time getting them a rating but you can never go wrong with ranking them first. The other teams are starting to fall into place and with more games, the ratings will firm up.
