Gramp's Missouri Girls Class One Basketball ratings

Here are Gramp's Missouri Girls Class One Basketball ratings - Updated 3/19/2023

Has there been a class one team like Meadville in the past twenty or more years?  Maybe there has some extraordinary teams but none in my memory like Meadville whose rating would put them in the top 10 in class five or six teams.  Wow!

They won their games this year by an average of 40 points and won by an average of 11 points in the state tournament with only Leeton staying close, losing 51-46.  Chadwick made a run at Meadville, losing by eleven in the state championship game and they made a statement by defeating Delta by two and Platte Valley by four.    I had Chadwick in my top ten all year but at least a twenty-point underdog to Meadville (wasn't that the case for most of their games?).  I thought maybe the win over Delta was a fluke but they showed their mettle the rest of the way.

I knew that the Delta vs. South Iron game in the first round would be a potential finalist, but I absolutely did not ever expect Chadwick to be there.  The teams Chadwick beat, Delta and Platte Valley (plus South Iron) were all very good and very close.  Just not good enough to challenge this exceptional Meadville team.

Congratulations to the Lady Eagles.  A once in a lifetime team.

Here are Gramps class one girls' final ratings.  Enjoy and see you next year.

Here are the Missouri class one girls' ratings by district.

There is a definitive favorite in every district except district six (the weakest), where anyone could win, and district twelve where Braymer and Santa Fe are co-favorites.

Coming out of districts, there will be an epic battle with Delta and South Iron in districts #1 and #2 and Leeton and St. Elizabeth in districts #7 and #8.

After that, expect the two best teams left in the top bracket, the South Iron/Delta winner and perennial powerhouse Platte Valley (South Nodaway/Jefferson Conception Junction) will battle for the chance to play undefeated Meadville from the lower bracket.  I state that knowing that any team can win on a given night but Meadville is 15-20 points better than anyone in the lower bracket, especially after beating class two favorite Bishop LeBlond by six on the road (I had Meadville a four-point favorite).

Thank goodness the basketball Gods did not put all of these great teams on one side of the MSHSAA bracket.

It should be an exciting class one girls' tournament!

I am still somewhat incredulous about the Meadville girls' basketball team and their 21-0 record.  Like Delta last year, Meadville is running over opponents by a 79-27 scoring margin.  Last night they took down Tina by 55.

Once Delta started playing Districts last year, their opponents put up a good fight and dropped their scoring margin to single digits, finishing 2nd at State to Platte Valley.  I had Delta on top all season based on their score differential but Platte Valley proved to be a tough competitor with more competition on their schedule.

This year, I am wondering if Meadville will come up against anyone that will take them all the way to the buzzer?  We will find out how good Meadville is on February 6th against Bishop LeBlond who is rated at 140.

I think the state tournament will have South Iron, or Delta, from the SE area meeting Platte Valley in the upper bracket and Meadville possibly going unchallenged until the state final in the lower bracket.  Crazy how three of the top four teams in the state would be in one bracket?

Gramp's class one girls include many of the same teams as the MBCA poll but the coaches are not giving much credit to Chadwick, Walnut Grove and Macks Creek.  On top of Gramps ratings are Meadville, South Iron, Delta and Platte Valley, traditionally strong teams but Meadville has not had a final four berth since 2008 so they might be due.  Lots of great teams in class one girls.

Here's the coaches poll

Class 1 Girls:

  1. South Iron
  2. Delta
  3. Leeton
  4. Meadville
  5. Platte Valley
  6. North Shelby
  7. Mercer
  8. St. Elizabeth
  9. Golden City
  10. Santa Fe

Others receiving votes: Walnut Grove, Chadwick, Hume, Pilot Grove, Braymer

I find myself in a quandary with the Missouri girl's class one ratings.  Delta seems to be the cream of the crop, outscoring opponents 101-36, for a whopping 65-point scoring differential which inflates their rating by at least 20 points.  But, and this is a big but, last year Delta was at or near the top of my ratings and they had an 81/34 scoring average/defensive points and then hit some tougher competition near the end of the year, narrowing the differential and dropping their scoring average into the 50s.  They beat perennial powerhouse South Iron and Walnut Grove before losing the title game to Platte Valley/Jefferson Conception/South Nodaway or whatever MSHSAA and the hometown folks want to call them.

Powerhouse South Iron and Meadville are also highly rated in class one, with Leeton, St. Elizabeth, and Platte Valley close behind.  It will be interesting to see if Delta is the real deal again or just running up the scores against powderpuff Bootheel teams right now.  I found a loss to class six Jackson on 12/19 that did not show on Delta's schedule.  That loss dropped Delta to #2 and elevated Meadville to #1.

Delta has some tough games on the schedule with Cape Notre Dame, New Madrid County Central, and Meadville over the next month which will tell us if they are ready for a state championship run in March.  Good luck to all the class one girl's teams.

After additional analysis, Wheatland and Pilot Grove moved up into the top 20.
