Gramp's St. Louis Area Metro Girls High School basketball ratings - 1/24/2023
Updated 1/24/2023
It has been over a month of frantic calculations for 650 boys and 630 Missouri girls basketball teams to get classes one through six in orderly shape (although some might argue that). In the meantime, I have neglected my St. Louis Metro area teams, especially the east side of the Mississippi River in Illinois. It is nearly a full-time job with 100 game scores coming in each day.
But, I am back with the St. Louis Metro "Large" and Small class school ratings. Why do I put "Large" is quotation marks, you ask? Well, Gramps is a stubborn man and I have always felt like the class five and six teams in Missouri should be treated as large schools, even though their student population is under 1000 students. You cannot call Incarnated Word a "small" school with a nationally-ranked team with a 15-0 record, including a recent 60-48 win over Louisville powerhouse Sacred Heart, an 83-game winning streak, a 412 and 40 record over the past 13 years and ten state championships no matter how many students they have. They are classified in class six, the largest class in the state. Of course, they would be #1 in either rating but I put them where they rightfully belong..... A very "large" basketball school.
So here are the St. Louis Metro Large and Small school ratings for teams within about 60 miles, give or take, from downtown St. Louis.
Enjoy!

It has been a while since I posted ratings. Last spring, in fact, and if you were keeping up, I predicted about 83% of all district, sectional and state play-off games using my Sagarin-like algorithm.
This fall, I have been pre-occupied with documenting 50 years of women's track and cross-country at the University of Minnesota, after spending the summer doing the same for my track and cross-country days as a Minnesota Gopher harrier.
It's time to get off the pot and get into the high school basketball season ratings. It takes some time to get a good ranking because so many teams don't even start playing games until the beginning of December. I have found that I can cheat a little of the ratings by starting from last year's final rating and adjusting as the scores start coming in. A horse of a certain color does not change much and develop stripes. Teams that are good, year-to-year, are generally good the next year and teams that are bad, well, you know the rest.
As always, the difference in the rating of two teams is the expected spread but, if you are on a high school team, and you read Gramp's ratings and think "wow, we are going to beat team B by 25 points", it might just not happen. You have to show up and lace up your Nike's and play the game. Nobody is going to lay down on you because Gramps has posted some cockamamie rating. So play the games and let the chips fall where they will on the rating side.
I have included St. Louis and Illinois teams within about 60 miles of downtown St. Louis. If your team is not on the list, give me a polite shout-out. I have generally placed teams in Large and Small classes based on school size with the exception of Incarnate Word Academy which is LARGE in basketball (class six and large in basketball tradition) and then I have ignored the school attendance. St. Joseph's Academy and Cor Jesu are also small schools in class six so I include them as large schools.
I will post this poll about every two weeks.
Here's the Large School St. Louis Metro Girls and the Small School ratings are listed below them:
