Gramp's Missouri Girls Class Two Basketball ratings

Here are Gramp's Missouri Girls Class Two Basketball ratings - Updated 3/19/2023

One month ago, I had Tipton in the #2 spot behind St. Josephs Bishop LeBlond and both looked like title contenders but Tipton ripped through the state tournament rounds, winning by a margin of 30 points and beating Le Blond by 19 in the championship game, avenging their only loss to Le Blond by 4 points back in late January.  Tipton outscored opponents, on average by 36 points, 68 to 32 points per game.

New Haven made a big run in the tournament, moving up from #17 in the mid-season to finish #9 in the final poll.  They did come home with a third-place trophy, making all their hard work so worthwhile.  Norwood, who finished fourth in the tournament was another team that made a run during the tournament, moving up from #25 to # 20 in the final ratings.

Like Meadville in class 1, Tipton could be in the top ten for class five or six.  They were that good.

Enjoy. See you next year.

The class two girls districts are an interesting read.  There will be some competitive contests in many districts, including district six (with #4 and #5 Canton and Schuyler County) and district sixteen (Bishop LeBlond and four other teams in the top 30), but the two best teams, #1 Bishop LeBlond and #2 Tipton appear to have a clear road to a faceoff in a state title battle.

Maybe it is the luck of the draw.  MSHSAA finally got a state tournament bracket right.  As my grandfather used to say "even a blind mule finds water."

What do I mean by that?  Well, districts 1-4 and 13-16 are in the upper bracket for the state, and districts 5-8 and 9--12 are in the lower bracket, which means that the best two teams, Bishop LeBlond and Tipton, could potentially meet for the state championship. They met recently and LeBlond came away with a four-point victory over the previously undefeated Tipton Cardinals and are now the only undefeated team themselves.  The Golden Eagles, led by Tatum Studer, could run the table in the regular season, and then the pressure will kick up a notch as they try to stay undefeated through the districts and playoffs.   North Platte may be the only team in the upper bracket that could keep the Golden Eagles from a second state title.  The first was back before MSHSSA records are shown (prior to 2008).

Tipton, who finished 3rd and 2nd in 2020 and 2021, has never won a state title but their road could be rougher with the third, fourth, and fifth-ranked teams, NE Cairo, Canton, and Schuyler County all in their bracket.

Should work out to be an exciting tournament and it is set up, without any forethought by MSHSAA, to get the best teams in the final four.  Like Grandpa said, "even a blind mule will find water."

Is this the year for Tipton girls?  Tipton was runner-up in 2020 and fourth in 2021.  Overall, Tipton has a whopping 103-19 record over the past four years and is undefeated this year at 14-0.  Tipton's closest challenge might come from Bishop LeBlond or NE Cairo but the Cardinals could be a favorite for a state title in classes three, four, and five!

Cross your fingers, Cardinal fans and let's hope the gals can bring home their first state title to Tipton, population 2867.  I bet the celebratory parade would be grand (but let's not plan that quite yet).

The only spot Gramps agrees with the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association poll is #1 Tipton.  After that, I have a slightly different quantifiable rating of the rest of the class two girls teams than MBCA.

I know Blue Eye fans are not going to be happy with me (#30 in Gramp's ratings, #6 in MBCA polls) but my calculations have North Platte, Canton, Salisbury and St. Vincent in the top ten where the MBCA has not even mentioned these teams.  Coaches, take a look at those worthy contenders.

It's still a little bit of a crap shoot but now that some teams have played 8 or 10 games, the numbers are firming up.  I expect Blue Eye to keep moving up in coming months.

Enjoy, stay warm and have a Happy Holiday.
